videopacolypz is a side project coming from dutch jungle / breakcore / dubstep producers deformer. they are strong players amongst the progressive electronic music scene for years already and are about to release a new album and limited 7inch single entitled >videopacolypz g2012<. this release is based on the philips >videopac g7000< gameconsole that came out back in 1978. with the limited choice of sounds coming from this computer, a complete album was recorded that will tear up dance floors this year. beware though, this is not the official new deformer album, but a side project in a similar tradition: videopacolypz g2012...

the legendary skatalites, alongside the later studio one in-house bands - the soul vendors, sound dimension, soul defenders and brentford road all stars ? were as much a part of the classic studio one sound as were the singers that they accompanied such as alton ellis, horace andy, marcia griffiths and bob marley and the wailers. this album features many of the musicians involved with studio one who literally defined reggae music. from the skatalites members tommy mccook, roland alphonso, jackie mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist vin gordon (a/k/a don drummond jnr), saxophonist cedric im brooks, keyboardist and twelve tribes of israel member pablove black. many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the back-bone of the jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000s of reggae producers ever-since. the album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under clement ?sir coxsoneÊ doddÊs supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. as well as sixteen killer tracks the album comes with new sleevenotes and photography by dennis morris and adrian boot making this another essential studio one reggae release for connoisseurs of reggae and newcomers alike.

evil madness has been described as the traveling wilburys of icelandic electronic music. behind the name stand men like petur eyvindsson, johann johannsson, sigtryggur berg sigmarsson, helgi thorsson and bj nilsen (who is not quite icelandic but was born in a country very near iceland). this album, >super great love<, presented by editions mego will be their 4th album since the time their formation in 2006. now for those of you reading who know the music of evil madness will know for sure that this band does what ever they damn well pleases when it comes to making the music. with >super great love< they want to get people in the good mood for the fresh new year and present them with some upbeat icelandic disko tunes.

a full length lp by ruins, an italian electro-wave duo. ruins formed in mestre in 1978 with the intention of experimenting with electronic devices and mixed media. they mainly created music out of self-expression without any intention of joining the mainstream. interested in multimedia, they had a strong visual aesthetic apparent via their album art, videos and projections. its where italo meets minimal wave. the -fire- videos are a must-see in order to grasp the full effect of the song, check out the first version here and rare second version here. the lp entitled -the art dance- features a collection of songs recorded between 1980-1984, some previously released, others never released before pressed on 180 gram vinyl and housed in a lovely hand-numbered glossy gatefold jacket lined with the bands history and photos, and accompanied by a lyrics insert sheet. tip!

debut release for stareaway, a new project of german >inventor of pop ambient< markus guentner with singer heiko badje, the man behind saudade-driven pop band la grande illusion. following several releases and highly successful and critically acclaimed albums guentner solely released since 2001 for kompakt and ware, guentner and badje contributed their first co-operation >baghira< on kompakts pop ambient 2006 compilation. markus guentners track >regensburg<, considered to be one of the best tracks kompakt ever released, was selected by sven väth to finish his mix of the second season and remixed by wolfgang voigt. for the start of the new hamburg based label couldnt care more they release two melancholic pop ambient tracks, the title track additionally remixed by osunlade, the acclaimed producer, dj and label owner of yoruba records. the both aerial and profound ambient soundscape of >learn how to love me< is waiting patiently, increasing softly while heiko badjes voice shivers with emotions of entreaty and wanting. it is followed by the sublime deepness of >unwise< in which badjes lyrics about love and temptation appear into a vision of pop as atmospheric intensity and disappear into somewhere else. on the b-side the yoruba soul suite reworks the original totally. osunlade is looking for a different kind of deepness, transforming ambient into an epic, floating journey of house music full of light and groove

we kick off 2011 with the latest collaborative plate of bristol-based build badness – label boss baobinga cooking up two what-do-you-call-it tracks with one of 2010s breakthrough producers, the man they call hyetal. starting 2010 with a huge punch drunk release alongside shortstuff, hyetal further refined his sound through collaborations with peverelist, and the massive prince-tastic anthem >phoenix< on orca – which can be found sitting proudly at number 36 in fact magazines tracks of the year run-down. with some big releases due in 2011, and more velour beats (with julio bashmore) on the way, we are very excited to have him involved in a build release.

microtrauma is a new cosmic force on the traum planet. for their >colorblind ep> they have attempted a sophisticated sound construction, succeeding in 3 brand new tracks.

produced in 2004, this ep marks an essential shift in the production of stefan goldmann to his modus operandi as a dedicated innovator. he had adapted the barricade guise to induce some serious deviations into the techno realm. yet, heads werent ready and he simply continued under his real name with his major breakthrough works: perlons blood ep and the legendary sleepy hollow tune. hidden from the public, aleko and frantic had built a prototypic aesthetic of rough, concrete-space sounds - reduced dark, metallic percussion grooves, spring reverbs and degraded post-acidic synths. you name it where you heard this sound years later. its revealing how far ahead these tunes were at the time of their creation. they sound more now than many current tracks. aleko is the 4/4 techno version of this soundset, locked-in clonk patterns built around a nitrous bassline. frantic could be a future development to todays dubstep, if it wasnt its actual historic predecessor. add the schizophrenic bass excursion heliotrope and you have a package of painstaking relevance. back then the a&rs simply didnt get it - thats why it took 6 years and the formation of victoriaville to finally bring these gems to light

back at the tail end of the last millennium bbe released a comprehensive overview of house music in the latter stages of the 20th century. >henry street music: the story so far - 1993 to 1999< was a slice of superior contemporary club classics featuring all of the key players, architects and music makers of the day. todd terry, armand van helden, kenny dope, dj sneak, 95 north, robbie rivera, davidson ospina, ralphi rosario, mike delgado, king britt, and a handful of others under various alter egos and nom de plumes. it was a given that they were all great records, what was all the more impressive was that they all originated from the same recording home, henry street music. a label conceived and devised by johnny demairo, an italian-american from jersey who talked the talk, could easily have been an extra in the sopranos, and was known affectionately as the shark. to others he was just plain johnny d, and one half of the production duo johnick with studio partner nicky p palermo jr. tracks such as d2- d2 by dj duke are collectors classics and will be re-released and re-mastered on vinyl for the first time in over 10 years

boys and diamonds is unmistakably a pop album but also one that comfortably fits in with kompakts long-standing lineage of genre-refracting releases. you will be hard up find another record that cohesively brings to mind siouxsie rubbing elbows with shabba ranks, giorgio moroder sipping daiquiris in bali, desmond dekker envisioned through skittering footwork, tom tom club sitting in with congotronics, even early madonna produced by chris and cosey. unlikely as all of that sounds, rainbow arabia makes it sound easy. mostly recorded at their home studio in echo park, muppet palace, boys and diamonds was written and produced by the couple with help from their friends in los angeles and beyond. drummer/producer extraordinaire butchy fuego (pit er pat, boredoms, mia) contributes arrangements and beats in places, and icy demons dylan ryan plays on the percussion-heavy island shuffle nothin gonna be undone . the album was mixed at the wonderful hobby shop studios in la by mudrock, who also adds some final production touches on the record. the 11 new songs on the album, were also made possible by the encouragement of peers/heroes in la like former ghosts, fool s gold, secret circuit, abe vigoda, and part time punks dj crew. outside of their hometown, they also found support and inspiration from kindred spirits like pictureplane, spoek mathambo, as well as their new home, the ever-illustrious kompakt

mihalis safras is back with another big time release on trapez ltd, produced with german artist pascal mollin. they have announced to go stronger on to the techno side with this release, but we certainly see the roots in post detroit and chicago house.

anyone who advertises on their facebook site that they create music for dogs while working under the name dachshund must have a sense of humor. and indeed, it seems the swiss dj, producer and label boss doesnt think much of sterile production and is prepared to use his sence of passion and fun to create rhythms of every kind in his work. perhaps this is a legacy of dashshunds musical roots: in the 90s he played in various reggae bands, which eventually took him to jamaica. from the sunny islands he brought back a dub influence which can still be heard in his music today. he has already proven, with his highgrade debut on the >group of connected heads compilation, his feeling for up-beat, bouncy rhythms. nothing has changed with his first solo release on highgrade. groovy, original and funky, it booms from the speakers. that the first track is called >stand firm<, must be due to the humor of dachshund: the beats immediately encourage you to do the exact opposite… shake your booty!

boys noize and housemeister, 2 good old friends from berlin with a lot of love for analog found together again to rave in the studio. after their first collaboration in 2006 under the name of eastwest, they are now brining us 3 new jams you don¥t want to miss. shizzo is the track youd probably expect from these 2 f..ckers:loud, noizy and stupid! its up and down parts shake the club like you were sitting in a rollercoaster - beware this is not for everyone. nbaxx is a new breakbeat track. breakbeat?yeah! with a hint of inspiration by lfo freak, this one comes quite minimal but hard, just the way these buddies like it. saturday the secret a side on this maxi is a disco-tech track, with moving arpeggios and big melodic break where spheric disco pads cool you down before you and the kids jump up to this piece of 2011 disco music.

averse to any easy classification, rainbow arabias continent-trekking, kaleidoscope pop is rooted in no particular time or place, employing modern technological processes to an array of musical cultures and eras. the los angeles duo began with the purchase of a lebanese casio that played microtonal scales and eastern beats, with which they quickly recorded their propulsive first ep, the basta, synthesizing bossa nova and industrial post-punk with heavy middle eastern vibes. digging deeper for inspiration from the worldly found sounds of sublime frequencies compilations, their follow-up ep, kabukimono, expanded the color palette of their >fourth world< pop with dark, arabic disco-dancehall jams sitting alongside sunnier moments with caribbean and african flourishes...

what a journey! well, these guys have been around for a while- they have gone through: rave, jazz, krautrock, garage, detroit, house, hip-hop, disco, folk, dubstep, electronica, funk, punk, wave, chicago house, handmade music and soul. all those nights at clubs, the records, the shelves, the dirt in the second-hand record shops, the stacked audio- and studio magazines in their toilets or elsewhere in the house, the hours spent making their own radio-shows, hundreds of hotels checked in and out of, dozens of sound-checks done. last but not least, the revivals, the subgenres, the fusion - well these peeps have given real influential input into some of these (sub)genres in the past. >lovin< is the second single release of the upcoming >alex and the grizzly< album which is due out in april 2011. alex barck is on the vocals together with lois longerling, who is known for her work with dollkraut. andre lodemann delivers a smart remix giving the tune his trade-mark sound and putting onto the house-dancefloors. prommer and barck are on tour with their own live show.

in just three years, berlin based artist dehnert has gone from unknown talent to underground hero with his very own >raw techno< sound making waves on labels like his own imprint fachwerk and now delsin, where he finds himself at home amongst the future music of talented cohorts redshape, a made up sound, delta funktionen and more. this ep is an introduction to his upcoming album framework - an uncompromising album made up of pure techno tracks of the sort youd expect to hear on the dancefloors of places like berghain or tresor. they go from pulsing and classic sounding to skipping and glitchy, through greyed-out and sandy via swinging and syncopated but always with a sense of restraint and control whether they are abstract, apocalyptic, atmospheric or whatever else. although his tracks are undeniably functional, at the same time, they are neither nondescript nor forgettable: somehow, through masterful sound designs and an accomplished knack for blending real tension and atmosphere with his obvious basic channel and berghain influences, mike dehnert manages to lock you into whatever mood takes his fancy with apparent ease.
